Hot shot crews are working on structure protection around the Pollard Loop area, and the Duck Scooper planes are continuing to drop water on the advancing edge. Winds are changing erratically. Homer Electric is preparing to shut down the transmission line and reroute power. Soldotna area residents may temporarily lose power. The Forestry department is looking for people with clean driving records and pickup trucks. Call Darren 250-6508. The last update at 9:00PM didn't have a new acreage count.
The Funny River Wildfire has grown past 67,000 acres and is only 5% contained. All of us here on the Kenai Peninsula are very grateful to all the firefighters who have been pouring into town to try and hold the line before the fire closes in on any homes. The winds have died down some tonight, and water bombing planes along with "Duck" Scooping planes are using water out of Skilak and Tustumena Lakes to drop on the fire. Across Cook Inlet the Tyonek wildfire has grown to 1820 acres. Tyonek is the village next to where I have done bear guiding with wounded veterans for years. I am hopeful that the firefighters get that blaze under control before the village is threatened. On a positive note, it is amazing to watch the community come together rally around those in need. For instance, today while I was at the DNR Forestry office in Soldotna, Kathy from Jersey Subs was in there dropping off menus and letting the staff know that they would stay open as long as they were needed. Alaskans are a unique breed of people, looking out for our neighbors is just in our blood. Stay classy Kenai.
